Words by Keane Fletcher
Nature is healing. Adele's hotly anticipated fourth album 30 might still be a month away from release, but as of ten o'clock this morning we have a brand new single 'Easy On Me'.
Sticking to what she knows best, the piano-driven ballad sees the singer contemplating her choices after the breakdown of a relationship (for those of you who missed her recent Instagram live, the album's about 'divorce, babe, divorce'). She sings:
Go easy on me/ I was still a child/ Didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me.
Similar to her last smash hit single 'Hello', the song arrives hot off the back of a viral marketing campaign which saw the number 30 projected on buildings around the world, a move many predicted signalled the arrival of a new album. And they were right. Taking to Twitter, the singer described the new album as
...my ride or die throughout the most turbulent period of my life. When I was writing it, it was my friend who came over with a bottle of wine and a takeaway to cheer me up. My wise friend who always gives the best advice. Not to forget the one who’s wild and says ‘It’s your Saturn return babes fuck it, you only live once.’ The friend who’d stay up all night and just hold my hand while I’d sob relentlessly not knowing why. The get up and go friend who would pick me up and take me somewhere I said I didn’t want to go but just wanted to get me out the house for some vitamin D. That friend who snuck in and left a magazine with a face mask and some bath salts to make me feel loved while inadvertently reminding me not only what month it actually was but that I should probably exercise some self-care!
30 will be released on November 19th via Sony Music.
